The DeLong Family
What is your favorite family tradition?
By far, our favorite tradition is our finger-food-feast for Christmas! With all the fun of mixing and mingling, littles running around, opening presents etc, we decided early in our marriage that we would skip the big 'sit down holiday meal' and create something just as special and elaborate.
We spread the table and kitchen bar with fruit and veggie trays, sausage balls, charcuterie platters, pot stickers, kid-friendly favorites like parker house sausage rolls, and of course some of the less healthy savory and sweet snacks as well. We snack between the holiday movies, gift-wrapping, board games, assembling and searching for batteries for those new toys. It started for convenience, but now it's our favorite tradition!

One of our best days was when we pulled off an elaborate vacation surprise for our 'turning 4' year old on his birthday. His daddy was traveling for work and we convinced him that we had to take his dad to a job site in another state because the travel department had messed up his flight. We had to do some very sneaky concealing to make it happen, but we received nothing short of shock and amazement when we finally told him where we were. It was the best surprise ever.

What's your number one tip for new parents?
After a commitment to 'safe sleep' practices, make a commitment to do whatever it takes to get some sleep yourselves. A rested parent is a better parent.
What has been the most surprising thing you've learned as a parent?
How much easier the second one is.
Tell us about your funniest parenting story (we all have them!)
We decided on a special way to tell our 7 year old "only child" that he was going to be a big brother. We gave him his Easter basket then broke the news. His lip quivered. He said "WHAT? no no no no. I don't want it. What does this even mean?" His eyes filled up with tears and he insisted that he would rather have a baby goat. Now his baby sister is his whole world, and she picks up everything and puts it in her mouth. She will eat ANYTHING and her big brother loves to tell people that it's because he asked for a goat and as far as he's concerned, he got one!
