Because my husband is in the military, it's hard to have a lot of family traditions with our whole family due to distance. When my husband and I first moved to Spain, we decided that we wanted to start a few of our own family traditions that we would eventually share with our children. Our second Christmas as a married couple was the first Christmas that we actually got to spend together.
That's when we came up with our Christmas Eve tradition - homemade pizza! We spend the day in our pajamas, making homemade pizza with our favorite toppings. My husband is extremely picky, so this means make two different pizzas. This past Christmas, 2018, was the first Christmas that we got enjoy this tradition with our beautiful daughter. It was so much fun watching her get to be included and loving it just as much as we always have.
There are so many stories that I could share. There are so many favorites, so many feelings - but there is one that will always hold a special place in my heart. July 27, 2018. It was homecoming day. For my husband & I, this was our fourth homecoming. It had become something that we were used to.He is gone for months at the time and it was finally time to welcome him home.
This time, though, I was there to welcome him home with our sweet bundle of joy in arms. Harper was seven months old and Dallas hadn't seen her in months. I will never forget his face, the light that you could see in his smile. He was so excited, so proud! She had changed so much, grown so much, but he scooped her up and you would have never known it had been gone. That day I was so excited to have my husband home, but I was even more excited to have a complete heart watching him embrace our daughter.
Embrace the change.
We are from a really small down in North Carolina. My husband and I went to school together, hung out with the same crowd, but never really talked to each other. A couple of months after we graduated, we went on our first date and we have been together ever since. I never would have imagined that this good looking football player I went to school with would end up joining the Navy, asking me to be his wife and us have a beautiful baby together!
Parenting doesn't come with an instruction manual. People can tell you stories, get you advice, and even warn you. You can ask a million questions, do all the research. But if there was anything that I could tell new parents - it never goes as planned and you just have to go with the flow. Embrace each moment. Every baby is different, but no one knows your baby better than you.
As crazy as it sounds, it took me a long time to really wrap my head around the fact that I was responsible for this life. It is my job to feed her, change her, hold her. It was my responsibility to teach and nurture this little person. I am the person that she wants when she is upset or scared. I created this life and it I now my job to make sure she becomes the best that she can be, every single day. It is the greatest realization that I have ever had!
Oh my goodness. There are so many and of course all embarrassing stories that we don't really want to admit to. We all know men, they don't always think about things until they are actually happening.
One day my husband decided he was going to change Harpers diaper on the ground, not realizing how fast she really was. Before he could get the new diaper under her to put it on, she had rolled over & started to crawl away. At first he thought it was hilarious watching her escape with no diaper and go straight back to playing as she was. She pulled herself up on her activity table and started playing as we are laughing and being "those" parents and taking her picture.
Next thing I know, I hear my husband say, "oh no, I know you aren't doing what I think you're doing!" Harper turns around and looks at him with a blood red face. Before he could get a wipe and get to her, she started to poo! He runs over and starts to try to catch it before the little rabbit balls start hitting the ground! Hahah! bless his heart, I have never seen him move so fast! We have never laughed so hard before and he will NEVER live that one down!
